None of these are required — plenty of practitioners work with none of them. They're aids to focus and symbolism, not the source of the working itself.
A double-edged ritual knife, traditionally used to direct energy and cast the circle rather than to cut anything physical. In most Wiccan practice, it's never used for actual cutting.
An alternative to the athame for directing energy, often favored for gentler, more invoking work rather than the athame's more assertive, banishing associations.
Holds water or wine on the altar, representing the element of water and, in Wiccan ritual, the receptive principle — often paired with the athame in the "Great Rite" symbolism.
A flat disc inscribed with a five-pointed star within a circle, used as a working surface for consecration and to represent the element of earth.
Mark the quarters, represent fire, and are burned in candle magic, where color and timing carry their own correspondences (see the Correspondences page).
A vessel for burning, brewing, or scrying — associated with transformation and, in folklore, with the Goddess as a symbol of rebirth and the womb.
Used to ritually sweep a space clear of negative energy before working, rather than for physical cleaning — the origin of the "flying broomstick" image in later folklore.
Rung to mark transitions within a ritual — opening or closing a circle, or calling attention at a specific point in the working.
Burned to represent air (the smoke) and fire (the ember), and to cleanse or consecrate a space before ritual through scent.
A personal record of rituals, spells, and correspondences kept by a practitioner — the living, working version of what a historical grimoire preserved in print.
A small figure made to represent a specific person, used as a focus for a spell directed at that individual — a tool of intention rather than of ritual structure.
Used as a focus for intention or energy work; specific stones are chosen by folk association (see the Correspondences page for common examples).
